The Covid pandemic forced us collectively to face the universal experiences of isolation and fear. In the world of art, we saw creative outpouring in response to the restrictions imposed on our daily lives. And much of that work transcends the Covid years and still has power today.
Yelena Zhavoronkova’s photographs, “Three Lost Years,” were made under the cloud of Covid, but the images have a life beyond their origins. Their beauty and relevance have outlived the pandemic and demonstrate an artist’s strength to survive.
“Waiting—long, tiresome months and years of waiting—for the news, for the vaccines, for any break in the narrative, for good developments, for positive change, for our lives and everyone else’s, and simply looking outward.” — Yelena
“In early March 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 quarantine, I was reluctant even to acknowledge its existence, let alone consider how it might affect my art. And I decided that I would not allow it to win.” — Yelena
“I protested. I looked outside. I noticed. I recorded. I dreamed. I composed and combined.” — Yelena
